Line 79. 2026 Season.
25. 3. 2026
In 2021, Liberec’s famous landmark lost its cable car connection from Horní Hanychov. The construction of a new cable car is a long-term plan, but there is still a need to make the 1,012-meter-high summit accessible to less experienced hikers. Therefore, starting in 2024, a new service has been introduced in the form of regional bus line 79, which, over a 6-km route, covers the elevation gain previously handled by the former cable car (approximately 400 m), albeit along a slightly different route. The lower end of the route begins at the terminus of public transit tram line 3. Unlike the cable car, it is thus directly connected to the high-capacity IDOL integrated transit network. The upper end, on the other hand, is located at an elevation of nearly 930 m above sea level near the Ještědka parking lot, which is approximately 70 meters lower in elevation than the original upper station of the cable car.
The upper terminus of Line 79 at Ještědka is a good starting point for several hiking routes. Follow the red hiking trail to the summit of Ještěd, which is less than 800 meters away. Following the red trail in the opposite direction, you’ll hike along the ridge to Pláně pod Ještědem; alternatively, you can choose the blue trail and head toward Světlá pod Ještědem, crossing other hiking trails along the way.
Service on Line 79 in 2026:
April and October: service on weekends and national holidays at one-hour intervals.
May, June, and September: Daily service at one-hour intervals.
July and August: Daily service with increased frequency at 30-minute intervals.
Departure times are also coordinated with connections to the tram line from the center of Liberec, which passes by the train station. This ensures public transportation access even from more distant parts of the Liberec Region. The line is wheelchair-accessible but is not designed to carry bicycles.
