Visiting Museums in the Jilemnice Region

Explore the winter sports museums and other interesting exhibits in the Jilemnice region at the foot of the Krkonoše Mountains.

Take the L3/R14A train from Liberec, transfer to the V41 line in Stará Paka, and get off at the Horní Branná stop, from where it’s just a short walk to the Skiing Museum in Dolní Branná. It’s located in a beautiful, restored log cabin about 900 m from the train stop. The museum is guided by Mr. Aleš Suk, a former coach of most of the Krkonoše Olympians, and you can explore exhibits not only on skiing but also on luge and ice skating. It is open every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on other days by appointment. You can find more information about the museum HERE.

If you have some time to spare, you can visit the castle and the “Life Beneath the Mountains” museum in neighboring Horní Branná, or the Harrach family mausoleum. The exhibition focusing on the history of the Podkrkonoší region is available only by prior telephone appointment. You can find more information HERE.

The third museum worth visiting is located in Jilemnice itself. It offers several permanent exhibits where you can learn many interesting facts about skiing, sledding, and bobsledding, as well as about Krakonoš and the Harrach family. You can reach Jilemnice by train from Stará Paka on line V41, transferring in Martinice v Krkonoších to line L9, or by bus line 960 directly from the regional capital (on weekends and holidays, service is available only from Semily—a transfer from train lines L3/R14A is required; as an alternative, you can take bus line 940 directly from Liberec). The Krkonoše Museum is located in the buildings of a Neo-Renaissance chateau in a park near the center of Jilemnice. Opening hours, admission fees, and other information can be found HERE.
