Luž – The Roof of the Lusatian Mountains

Luž, the highest peak of the Lusatian Mountains (793 m above sea level), offers a magnificent panoramic view in all directions. Although it is not among the highest peaks, the hike to the summit is quite steep.

From the summit, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of landmarks such as Jedlová, Ralsko, Velký and Malý Bezděz, Ještěd, and Smrk. The towns of Varnsdorf, Großschönau, and Zittau will lie right at your feet. In good weather, you can even spot the tower of the Dresden TV transmitter or Sněžka. The panoramic view also extends into the German interior and to the Polish brown coal mine in Turów.

Access Options and Transportation to IDOL

You can set out for Luž from several starting points:

From Mařenice, Dolní Světlá: The closest way to reach Luž is by bus on line 441 Nový Bor – Cvikov – Krompach (weekdays) / 444 Cvikov – Krompach – Lindava – Sloup v Krompach – Lindava Krompach – Lindava (weekends and holidays) from Nový Bor to the Mařenice, Dolní Světlá stop. From there, it’s a 3.5 km walk (map here).

• From Jedlová: You can start from the Jedlová train station, which is served by trains on lines L4 (Mladá Boleslav – Rumburk ) or R22 (Kolín – Šluknov). The distance to Luž from there is 8.5 km. (map here).
• From Großschönau: Another option is to take the L7 train line to the German station Großschönau. The hike to the summit from there is over 7 km (map here)

You can use the IDOL fare on bus lines 441 and 444 and on train lines L4 and R22 coming from Česká Lípa. On line L7, the IDOL fare ends in Hrádek nad Nisou. For the trip to Großschönau, we recommend the Euro-Nisa-Ticket+.
