The history of collecting in Zittau began with a single gift from Vienna—a cylindrical pillar sundial—on June 13, 1564. Scientific instruments, works of art, natural history artifacts, and curiosities, along with manuscripts and books, were brought together to form one of the first public collections in Central Europe. The collections have been continuously expanded and today comprise more than 40,000 objects. Immerse yourself in the history, art, and culture of this fascinating tri-border region. The greatest treasures are the two Lenten tapestries—unique in Germany and renowned throughout Europe. The Great Zittau Passion Tapestry from 1472 tells the story of God and humankind in 90 scenes. The Small Zittau Passion Tapestry from 1573 depicts the crucifixion of Christ and is framed by 30 Passion symbols.
