Luž: The Roof of the Lužické Mountains, with Views in Every Direction
The highest peak, which rewards you with a 360-degree panoramic view
Luž (793 m above sea level) is the queen of the Lužické Mountains. Although it is not among the highest mountains in the Czech Republic, the hike to its summit is quite steep and challenging. The reward, however, is well worth it—a magnificent 360-degree view in all directions.
What You’ll See from the Summit
From Luž, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view. The towns of Varnsdorf, Großschönau, and Zittau will lie right at your feet. You’ll spot well-known landmarks such as Jedlová, Ralsko, Velký and Malý Bezděz, Ještěd, and Smrk.
On a clear day, you can see as far as the Dresden TV tower or Sněžka. An interesting contrast is offered by the view into the German interior and the vast Polish brown coal mine at Turów.
How to get to Luž with IDOL?
You can reach the summit from several directions. Choose the best option for you:
- By bus from Nový Bor (Shortest walking route) This option brings you closest to the summit. The final stop is Mařenice, Dolní Světlá. From there, it’s just a 3.5 km walk to the summit.
- On weekdays: Take bus line 441 Nový Bor – Cvikov – Krompach.
- On weekends and holidays: Take bus line 444 Cvikov – Krompach – Lindava.

- By Train via Jedlová (For Tourists) Start from the Jedlová train station. Trains on lines L4 (Mladá Boleslav – Rumburk) or R22 (Kolín – Šluknov) arrive here. The hiking trail to Luž from there is 8.5 km long.

- By Train Through Germany (International Route) An interesting option is to take the L7 train to the German station of Großschönau. The hike to the summit from there is over 7 km.

Important information about the fare
- The IDOL fare is valid on bus routes 441 and 444 and on train lines L4 and R22 (from the direction of Česká Lípa).
- Travel to Germany: On the L7 train line, the IDOL fare is valid only up to the Hrádek nad Nisou station. For travel to Großschönau , we recommend using the Euro-Nisa-Ticket+, which is valid throughout the entire Nisa Euroregion.
